Editing and Proofreading
Precision.

When I began my creative consulting business as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader over 20 years ago, I recognized the importance of precision in my work.

Precision is a characteristic that goes beyond using accurate grammar and punctuation. Precision is a goal that can only be achieved by having knowledge of my clients’ fields of work, which include:

•
Medical
• Technical
• Engineering
• Legal
• Manufacturing
• Education
• General Business

I’ve helped clients with the following types of documents and more…

•
Advertisements
• Annual reports
• Articles
• Blog posts
• Books
• Brochures
• Data sheets
• Newsletters
• Presentations
• Proposals
• Prospectuses
• Reports
• Speeches
• Technical manuals
• Theses
• Web pages/sites
• White papers

Professionalism.

In addition to my role as a creative consultant, I am a fully employed professional in a Fortune® 500-ranked corporation. Moonlighting as a copyeditor, writer and proofreader provides an additional outlet for my creative side and my love for words and language. As a professional, I will not accept assignments that I cannot complete to my and my clients’ satisfaction. I believe in being completely up-front in my commitments.
What kind of professional editor and proofreader would I be if I could not be taken at my word?

Perfection.

Editing and proofreading are all about perfection, which in many cases can be subjective. In my work I defer to my clients' preferred style (e.g., The Associated Press, AMA, APA, Elements of Style, etc.). I also pay close attention to meaning and content. As a routine matter of practice, I research word and referenced name spellings, check Web links, and verify phone numbers. Where appropriate, I will make suggestions regarding word usage, punctuation, word breaks, ragging, capitalization and the use of trade and signature marks. In addition, I will check for proper use of cited references and legal/copyright notifications.

Proofreading Facts

•
It is twice as hard to detect mistakes in your own work than it is to detect them in someone else’s.
• Two ways to catch errors are by reading very slowly and by reading out loud.
• In this electronic age, simple mistakes multiply exponentially in email, electronic files and Web links.
• Carelessness in published material can damage your image as a professional and can damage your company’s reputation.
• Failure to check telephone numbers, URLs, Web links and copyright notifications can result in significant reprinting costs, as well as legal liabilities.

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
—Antoine de Saint-Exupery
